![]() If I had no workaround for the problem, I would probably drop the money for a new battery, but seeing as how I can control it (so long as I remember to turn on my headlights prior to starting the engine), and the battery never has any issues starting the engine, it's a little hard to justify spending the money after the test came back good and they won't replace it under warranty.Īt this point, it's just another annoyance I live with, like the front suspension clunk, the B-pillar creak, my AC spontaneously switching to re-circulate until I toggle it on and off, 1qt per oil change interval oil consumption, and the lack of 3-2 downshift when you slow down to a "rolling" stop and then have to suddenly accelerate. The way to find out would be to either go back to stock headlights, which is downright unsafe any time I drive at night It very well could be multiple issues contributing to the same behavior. The "safe mode" idea comes from the fact that steering assist is reduced in this state as well, which probably further protects from voltage drops by taxing the alternator+battery less through the electric steering. My hunch is that the cause is a momentary voltage drop when you initially turn on the headlights, which triggers a safe mode for the cherokee to avoid mis-synchronization between the PTU and RDM if their individual CPUs pooped out from the voltage drop. I know it's not ideal, but at least that way you don't get the unpleasant surprise of NOT having 4x4 in inclement weather when you switch to snow mode. ![]() I believe Snow mode automatically turns the headlights on on vehicles equipped with auto headlights.Įven if you have auto headlights, there should be a way to force them on before starting the engine. Therefore, I have started to turn my headlights on before I start the car if I anticipate I will still be driving once it gets dark and I actually need the headlights. What I have found is that it never happens if the car is not running. Luckily, I have manual headlights, so I control when it happens to me. I also have an HID kit with PWM modules installed and I occasionally get the instrument cluster reboot, 4x4 unavailable, and stability control off issue.
